If you have been saving up for all your life to go on a trip around the world then you should know that there are some places that you shouldn’t miss. This kind of holiday can be described as a real challenge but the satisfaction may be worth the sacrifice.

One of the sites that you shouldn’t miss in your trip is the Iguazu Falls in Argentina/Brazil. Some people say that this waterfall is even more spectacular than Niagara Falls. When you get there you will see that they are actually two waterfalls that are spread over 2.7 kilometers. Another place that you should visit is the Lost City of Machu Picchu, Peru. It is true that you will have to backpack until you reach the city but nobody that has visited it has complained in anyway.

The next stop should the Mayan ruins in Tikal, Guatemala. These ruins are buried deep down in the heart of the rainforest and specialists say that only a small part of them have actually been discovered so far.

Something else that you shouldn’t miss are the Great Pyramids of Giza, Egypt. They are near Cairo, the capital of Egypt, very close to the city of Giza. What this means that you will not have to travel through the dessert to reach them.

The Great Wall of China is the path leading to the Forbidden City and it is something that you should visit in your trip around the world. You can go there by bus and also you have the possibility of going with a group. However, if you feel the need to meditate a bit you can take a walk all on your own.

Belize, formerly the British Honduras is the only country in Central America that does not have a coast line on the Pacific Ocean. Belize is home to the native Mayan people found in the north and northwest of the country and where you will find many Mayan ruins to visit and beautiful lush jungles with exotic plants and animals. On their Caribbean coast you will find worldclass diving, swimming, snorkelling and deep-sea fishing.

Guatemala has a deep Mayan culture evident in many cities as well as ruins and archaeological sites throughout the country. There is evidence of human settlers in Guatemala dating back to at least 15,000 BC. There are beautiful lakes in the mountains, volcanoes and picturesque villages throughout the country. Guatemala is a perfect destination for a true traveller who has a love for history but keep in mind that you will not be able to see all of the treasures this country has to offer in one trip.

Honduras is the second largest country in Central America with a coastline on the Caribbean and the Pacific. Honduras has a predominantly mountainous area on the interior and a rather long coastal plains along the Caribbean coast where you will find great beaches, coral reefs and snorkelling. Travelling through the country you will find many colonial villages and Mayan ruins.

El Salvador is less travelled than other countries in Central America but that is not to say it’s not worth a visit. El Salvador has wonderful museums, galleries and vibrant bars in the beautiful city of San Salvador. You will also find amazing forests, sparkling clear lakes, active volcanoes and a fabulous surfing destination in Punta Roca. El Salvador is definitely a destination to consider if you are looking for a destination off the beaten path.
